SPORTS COLLEGE EVENTS

Over the course of the school year, Benfield Sports College run a number of large-scale events. Many of these are annual events which aim to raise achievement for the pupils concerned.

The first event of the school year is the Year 7 Teambuilding Day, in which Y7 pupils are split into teams and have to undertake a variety of physical, emotional and intellectual tasks in order to accumulate points towards their final score. Pupils are briefed on the importance of co-operation and planning in order that they have the best possible chance of success.

Our Colours evening in April recognises and rewards the sporting endeavours of our pupils. We award bronze colours to any sports participant who has represented Benfield School in competition against another school. Silver colours are presented to anybody who represents Newcastle or Tyne and Wear, or to anybody who represents their club in a national competition whereas Gold colours are given to pupils who represent their country. The dearth of amazing sporting talent at Benfield means that every year we make over 400 award presentations, usually to over 200 pupils. We hold this event in great esteem and always hire a local theatre and invite some of the country’s top sporting personalities to make the awards to our pupils.

We also organise a Sports Masterclass Day towards the end of the school year in which we suspend our curriculum and invite local sports clubs to come in and deliver classes to those pupils who have chosen to participate in one of their sessions. Every year we offer a wide range of activities which this year included ice-skating, climbing, tchoukball, rowing and mountain biking. We usually invite the pupils in Year 6 classes who have opted to come to Benfield as this eases their transition into secondary school.
